Bike Racks For Theft Prevention

With cycling quickly becoming one of the most popular sports, not to mention bicycle commuting on the rise, there has been an influx of bicycles into our society. With an increase in bicycles however, comes an increase in bicycle theft. There are ways to prevent becoming a victim of bicycle theft which are extremely easy and involve the use of a bike rack. There has also been an increase in accessories to make bicycle riding more convenient. The best accessory is a bike rack that attaches to your car or that can be found on public transportation.

Bike racks of older days were quite inferior to newer designs. Older versions were known as wheel benders. They were so named because the wheel of your bicycle would fit into a forked piece of metal in order to keep it in place. Since the wheel was the only part of your bicycle that was actually locked up, a thief only had to remove the front wheel in order to steal your bike. Newer models known as Sheffield Racks square arches made up of thick metal bars. The top of the rack is the same size as the top of the bicycle frame allowing for more security. The bike rack is then fixed to the ground or another immovable surface. These types of racks have greatly cut down on the amount of bicycle theft.

Another type of bike rack is used to attach your bicycle to your car or truck and can also be found on public transportation such as buses. These allow you to take your bicycle with you anywhere you go. Depending on what type of vehicle you have, there are many different designs and styles of bike racks. You can also find them in multiple styles for when you need to carry more than one bike. Make sure you carefully read the manufacturers instructions for attaching the bike rack to your vehicle and for loading your bike onto the rack. This will help reduce any chance of damage to your car or bicycle.

When you choose public transportation and need to bring your bicycle, make sure you are prepared to load your bike as soon as the bus reaches you. You do not want to hold up the other passengers by not being ready or not knowing how to properly load your bike. Do not expect the bus driver to hop out of his seat and help you either (though do let them know what you are doing). In order to load it you should have all extraneous objects removed from the bike before the bus arrives. This includes water bottles or any tools that you may have with you for your bike. Pay attention to the loading instructions on the rack and move swiftly while loading and unloading.

With so many great accessories for your bike, you no longer have an excuse not to ride. So grab some friends, grab your bikes and toss them on the car for a trip you will never forget!
