ATP World Tour - Davydenko Will Defend His Title At International German Open

Davydenko had an excellent and promising start this season at Doha, where he won his 20th ATP World Tour title after defeating Federer in the semi-final and Nadal in the final of the 2010 Qatar ExxonMobil Open. Unfortunately he began to suffer from a wrist injury that caused him to loose the final in Rotterdam, to retire from the Dubai Tennis Championship, and to withdraw from the 2010 BNP Paribas Open. Due to this injury he was not able to participate in the French Grand Slam of 2010, and also in the 210 Sony Ericsson Open, 2010 Monte-Carlo Rolex Master, 2010 Internazionali BNL d�Italia, and the 2010 Mutua Madrile�a Madrid Open, just to name the most relevant tournaments he missed during this forced three month absence.

German Open

The two biggest absentees are Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who in 2007 and 2008 disputed the dream final of any present tournament, where the Swiss won the first battle and the Spaniard had his revenge one year later. Since 1892 this International men�s tournament has been not only the biggest, but also the most important tennis competition in Germany.

Even though these two marvelous players will be absent this year, 48 top single players, with 11 elite ATP World Tour stars will be in charge of delighting the 13,200 fans that will gather in Rothenbaum�s Tennis Center from July 17th-26th. Also 16 doubles teams will be adding more action to the clay surface, and will be on the run as well for a piece of the �1,000,000 price.


The most serious threats for Davydenko on the battle for the title are the Spaniards players Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro. The Russian will also have to be on guard with Fernando Gonzalez, Gilles Simon, Jurgen Melzer and Gael Monfils, who complete the list of favorites.

Some people find in Davydenko�s game some similarities with Andre Agassi�s, like his anticipation, which helps him to be in control of each play, and makes his game more offensive. This tournament being played on a clay surface makes Davydenko stronger, since his running shots have a higher percentage of becoming winners. Opponents need to watch after his backhand, as he manages to put the ball where he desires. His style if more effective on hard and clay surfaces, where he has won eight and nine titles respectively.

Still pending

There is a big title that Davydenko is missing, which happens to also be the highest one that a tennis player can wish for, a Grand Slam. New York is more or less a month and a half away, and it is the last chance that he will have this year to accomplish this goal. It is played on hard surface and has 2000 points in game for the winner, another great motivation for the Russian to revert his luck in this type of tournaments.
